Don't Buy Horses: Adoption Is a Viable Option!

If you are ready to buy horses, please consider spending your money to adopt horses instead! For a lot of reasons, there are tons of good horses that need to be adopted, and you can still find exactly the horse you need and want while saving a horse from an uncertain fate at the same time.

Even though the PMU industry has been virtually shut down, there are still PMU mares and foals left that need homes. These horses are all different breeds, and many of them have been rescued and are living on horse rescue farms. The farm owners have worked with these horses and usually know a lot about them! They can help you choose a horse that will meet your needs, whether you are looking for a dressage horse or trail horse or even a cart horse. The Animali Farm is one such rescue farm that has done a lot of good work with nurse mares and PMU mares and foals.

Another place to find horses for adoption is thoroughbred rescue farms. Many thoroughbred racing horses are finished with their racing careers as early as four years old, and they still have a lot of living to do! Thoroughbreds make excellent dressage horses, as well as being great cross-country horses and hunter/jumper competitors. Farms that take in retired racehorses also work with them to figure out what discipline they will be best for. You can find an excellent horse that will do well for you for years at a thoroughbred retired racing farm.

Frequently horses need to be adopted because their owners have fallen on hard economic times and can't care for them anymore. Some horses are simply rescued because they were being abused or neglected. A horse like that may need extra special care while you reclaim her from her past, but it's very possible to do so and the bond you will have with your horse as a result is second to none. I speak from experience!

One mistake that people make when they think of adopting a rescued horse is to think that they will save money. This may be true in some cases, because if you were thinking of spending upwards of $10,000 on a horse with a pedigree, then you can spend a lot less than that on a rescued horse. The rescued horse won't have a pedigree though! However it costs a lot of money to rescue horses. Frequently the rescue operation has to pay the price the horse would have gotten the owner if it had been sold for meat. Then there's transportation to the rescue farm, vet care and feeding until adoption. So it may cost a couple of thousand dollars to rescue a horse. However, you will have done a truly good deed and your new horse will thank you by working hard for you and being a dream equine companion. Count on it!

When you're ready to spend money on buying horses, please consider adopting them instead. At least check it out as part of your hunt for the perfect horse.
