The Many Options In Horseback Riding Vacations
51
Many options are available in horseback riding vacations. There are dude ranches that operate year round and offer guests many unique opportunities. There are outfitters who specialize in trail rides through the local terrain. Some ranches will offer two or three day excursions and week long packages as well, to accommodate the various needs of vacationers.
The dude ranch or horseback riding vacation is become more popular, as people want experiences that challenge them, yet help them to forget the pressures of every day life, particularly work. People are removed from all the electronic devices that usually keep that at a short distance from being summoned by employers or family members. They want to do more than simply look at the view from a hotel suite.
Many outfitters provide a real working ranch experience, complete with accommodations in a bunk house and real outdoor cowboy cooking. Some will offer every day activities, such as cattle branding and herding, as part of the day's itinerary. This is a great choice for adults and families with older children, who want to teach their kids the value of hard work. It can also be educational, in a hands-on learning environment that is more fun than the classroom.
Some people prefer to stay at the ranch and simply participate in horse activities throughout the day. For families with younger children, places that offer free riding skills instruction are probably most suitable. Ranches that offer kids activities or competition on horseback, amateur roping or herding may also make the entire trip more enjoyable.
Other outfitters provide pack trips that can last from one overnight, up to four or five days. These are probably more suitable for skilled riders or those who have had prior experience on a horse. They also require a certain level of physical fitness, as many will experience stiffness or soreness after sitting in the saddle all day. The best way to prepare for such an outing, aside from becoming comfortable in a saddle, is to bring plenty of comfortable, loose fitting cotton pants or jeans, plenty of t-shirts, sweatshirts and a good fitting pair of boots. Hat are also a good idea for those who may easily burn when exposed to the sun.
There are options in location for such excursions as well. Colorado and Wyoming have plenty of hill country, so trips into the wilderness may provide plenty of woodlands and scenery, as well as the possibility for some slightly rough terrain. There are Western locations located in drier, warmer climates, that will require an adjustment for those living in colder climates.
